Three Reasons to Try Reflexology

Hand Foot Reflexology Procedure 160x116

Thirty plus years in this field have revealed to me that there are three major reasons that people seek out Reflexology. As a Reflexologist, think about the people who come to you for a Reflexology session. I believe you will have a similar conclusion as I did.

Body Pain Map 314x231 One is for stress and pain relief; a desire for the body to return to a state of relaxation and being free of pain. It is a known fact that body cannot heal until it is in a state of rest and relaxation, which means relaxation is the basis of health. If we are in the business of promoting health and wellness the bottom line is achieving long-lasting health and wellness. To achieve this result, the focus is on eliminating the absence of a relaxed mind and body.
Because of its effect on the central nervous system,Reflexology has a remarkable ability to deeply relax both body and mind.
Reflexology shifts the autonomic nervous system from the sympathetic state (in which we are interacting with and responding to the world around us) to the healing parasympathetic state.

In the parasympathetic state, brain wave patterns shift from the fast beta levels to the slower alpha and theta levels, the only conditions in which the body can relax and rejuvenate itself. For many people, the only time in which they experience themselves in a relaxed state is when receiving Reflexology.

Family Reflexology 2 Just learning some basic Reflexology techniques can also produce some amazing stress and wellness relief for the body, mind and emotions you will appreciate.

The second reason people include Reflexology in their lives is to address chronic pathologies. Reflexology is a unique manual therapy, which is capable of influencing homeostasis and functioning of all of the body’s internal systems. A certified Reflexologist can create a very specific wellness plan that will positively support the health of the body’s systems, organs, cells and glands. Just think of Reflexology as being a “chemical-free” approach to body wellness.

Hand and Foot Pain

Another time people turn to reflexology is when their feet and/or hands hurt. The pain may be associated with an injury, plantar fasciitis, peripheral neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, sprains and /or breaks, to name a few.

Each of these conditions demands a different focus and each of them is helped with a specific careful and detailed Reflexology session integrated with other alternative healthcare practices, suggested exercise, nutritional evaluations based on a strong understanding of anatomy and physiology of the nervous system.

When a Reflexologist looks at the body system they are better able to stimulate the nerve endings to release the toxins and impurities that are causing blockage that is a big contributor to the pain in the feet and hands.

As a Reflexologist or a potential client what do you see as reason for a Reflexology session?

Health Facts about Your Feet

Your feet are amazing diagnostic tools that can use as clues potentially pointing to a whole host of health problems. But you don’t need to be a doctor to understand what your feet are saying about your health — you just need to know what warning signs to look for. If you notice any of the following telltale signs or symptoms in your feet, you may want consult a healthcare practitioner:

Dry, Flaking Skin
Dry Cracked Feet 160x104If the skin around your heel or on the ball of your foot is dry, cracked, or flaky, it may be a warning sign of a thyroid condition. Your thyroid gland produces hormones that control your metabolic rate, blood pressure, tissue growth, and nervous system functions. Dry skin can signify a problem with your thyroid. Obviously, dry skin can also be the result of many less serious health issues, and sometimes your skin dries out simply because of changes in the weather. But if you notice that the skin on your feet is dry, and you also have symptoms like weight gain, numbness in your hands, or vision problems, visiting a healthcare practitioner may offer some wellness solutions.

Balding Toes
While toe hair is more common and visible in men, women generally have fine hairs on their toes as well. If you notice that your toes are losing a little bit of hair, or if they’ve gone completely bald, it could be a sign of poor blood flow. One cause of insufficient blood supply to the feet and toes is peripheral arterial disease, or PAD for short. When plaque builds up in the arteries of your legs, blood flow can be restricted and PAD can set in. If left untreated, PAD could lead to a heart attack or stroke, or even put you at risk for amputation. If you suspect PAD, see a healthcare practitioner. You can combat symptoms of PAD by giving up smoking, maintaining a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and managing other health conditions, like hypertension or diabetes that can contribute to the condition.

Foot Numbness
Numb Feet 160x127Like toe baldness, foot numbness due to a lack of blood flow in the area can be a sign of PAD. You’ve probably experienced numbness in your feet if you sat in one position for too long, or if you fell asleep at an awkward angle. But if it happens regularly or while you’re active, it’s a problem you shouldn’t ignore. Foot numbness is also one of the more common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy related to type 2 diabetes, which affects millions of people. Diabetes complicates blood flow to your feet, which means wounds or cuts may take a longer time to heal, leaving you susceptible to infection. If you have irregular bouts of foot numbness, and wounds on your feet just don’t seem to heal, talk to a healthcare practitioner. To promote healthy blood flow and help prevent type 2 diabetes, be sure to get Reflexology, regular exercise and start eating healthy foods.

Black Spots or Lines Under Your Toenails
Blackspot ToenailWhen someone steps on your toes or you drop a heavy object onto your foot, you’ll most likely have some toenail discoloration. Dark discoloration under your toenail isn’t typically concerning if you know what caused it. But if you notice discoloration — or black and brown lines — under a toenail and you don’t remember injuring your toe, you might want to talk to your doctor. Dark, vertical lines under a toenail could be a sign of a hidden melanoma. We’re getting better at fighting cancer every day, but hidden melanomas often go overlooked and untreated. Toenail discoloration could also be caused by a fungal infection, and while that’s much less severe than a potential cancer diagnosis, you should not ignore it. My advice is to check your toenails for discoloration every time you cut your nails.

Morning Foot Pain
Foot Pain 89x160A number of people have foot pain in the morning. Burning or shooting foot pain that happens when you take your first few steps out of bed can indicate of a number of potential issues. First, it could be a sign of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which inflames your joints and can cause pain even in the small joints of your feet. You can control foot pain and other of rheumatoid arthritis symptoms with alternative therapy and some conventional practices in addition to regular exercise. It’s also possible that your morning foot pain is caused by plantar fasciitis, a condition caused by inflammation in the thick band of tissue that connects your heel to your toes; the band remains in a contracted state while you sleep. When you take your first steps of the day, the tissues stretch. If you’re dealing with inflammation, you’ll notice pain. Some helpful tips are stretching your feet before you get out of bed, or doing foot-strengthening exercises, can help prevent the onset of plantar fasciitis. Lastly, morning foot pain could be caused by a muscle cramp. As with plantar fasciitis, you can avoid foot cramps by stretching your foot muscles before you get out of bed. But cramps may also be a sign of dehydration or a lack of certain nutrients in your diet. Cramps mean your body isn’t getting enough calcium, potassium, and magnesium. You can help prevent morning foot cramps by eating a balanced diet and drinking water before heading to bed.

Swollen Feet
Swollen Feet 160x85This is usually a temporary nuisance caused by standing too long, a long flight or not drinking enough water and sometimes when pregnant. In contrast, feet that stay swollen can be a sign of a serious medical condition. The cause may be poor circulation, a problem with the lymphatic system, or a blood clot. A kidney disorder or under active thyroid can also cause swelling. If you have persistent swelling of your feet, a Reflexology session is helpful along with a wellness program prepared by a healthcare practitioner.

Foot Spasms
Foot Spasms 160x71A sudden, sharp pain in the foot is the hallmark of a muscle spasm or cramp, which can last many minutes. Overwork and muscle fatigue are common causes. Other causes include poor circulation, dehydration, or imbalances in potassium, magnesium, calcium, or vitamin D levels in the body. The changing hormone levels of pregnancy or thyroid disorders may play a role. If spasms are frequent or severe see a healthcare practitioner. Reflexology and Strengthening exercises can help with muscle fatigue.

Yellow Toenails
Yellow Toenails 160x128Your toenails tell a lot about your overall health. A fungal infection often causes thickened yellow toenails. Thick, yellow nails also can be a sign of an underlying disease, including lymph-edema (swelling related to the lymphatic system), lung problems, psoriasis, or rheumatoid arthritis. Herbal and homeopathic remedies have been found to be helpful along with a wellness program by a healthcare practitioner.

White Nails
White Toenails 160x103Injury to the nail or illness anywhere in the body can cause white areas in the nails. If part or all of a nail separates from the nail bed it can appear white — and may be due to an injury, nail infection, or psoriasis. If the nail is intact and most of it is white, it can sometimes be a sign of a more serious condition including liver disease, congestive heart failure, or kidney disease. Talk with a healthcare practitioner to identify the cause and prepare a wellness plan.

Reflexology and Stress Free Living

StressFreeZone 160x108Reflexology is what opens the door to stress free living. When the body is relaxed, pain free with toxins being released and improved circulation the body is responding to the benefits of a Reflexology session. When a person receives Reflexology the nervous system send the message to the brain to begin the healing process. This is what allows a person to go through the 9 steps of “stress free living”

1) Accept the problem
You have to be at peace with a problem, WHILST it is in existence, for the solution to come to you. i.e. you have to accept yourself where you are, no matter what — you cannot solve any problem without first accepting it, and yourself. We spend so much of our time trying to deny what has happened or deny a part of ourselves, pushing it away, which only leads to more of the problem appearing in your life. Very often simply fully accepting the part of you that is creating the problem will be enough to have it disappear, as it is so used to being pushed away/rejected. Part of you is trying to send you a message; maybe it’s time you listened.

2) You cannot attract to you, that to which you are not already connected to…So be an appreciator. One of the fastest ways to attract what you want towards you is learning to appreciate the good in whatever situation it is life is presenting you with. It is not important to verbalize your appreciation but simply to offer it. Appreciation is the antidote to some of the lowest forms of energy and emotions we are capable of e.g. shame, resentment, etc. By offering thanks and assuming that you already have what you seek, you immediately begin to attract more of it towards you, whether you have any of it or not.

3) Happiness is not pleasure…The experience of pleasure is a right now, in-the-moment, sensory-rich, and sights, sounds, and feelings experience in your person. Happiness is your meta-experience when thinking about something that brings you such pleasure. Happiness cannot be experienced by the senses directly, only pleasure can. Focus your life on having more now-moment pleasure experiences, rather than accumulating reasons or things to be happy about.

4) Stay connected to source…Find your own personal way to stay connected to your inner consciousness (the you feeling). For many this is meditation, music, song, etc. Why are we so attracted to parks? water? nature? wildlife and animals? We have awareness on some level that we are part of a much greater collected consciousness, something else, something higher than us. Some people may be partially disconnected from it, but you can never fully disconnect from it. Notice that the word emotion is e + motion.  People are attracted to source because we recognize that’s where we want to be, we want to have those feelings, we want to experience that energy, because the energy, just by being in its presence, makes us feel better about ourselves.

5) Live in the moment…We only have access to our full personal power in the present moment. This is practicing the art; it’s a habit to be developed, a life-skill. The extent, to which you are connecting, on some unconscious level, either into the past or into the future, is the extent to which you rob yourself of your present power. You are not going to be experiencing what it is that you want; therefore you are moving your emotional point of attraction, into negative territory. Being in the present moment is the only way you can make an emotional connection to what it is that you want, and therefore begin the process of it becoming attracted to you in future present moments. This type of emotional alignment cannot be achieved when your thoughts are in the future or past. You must be in the present moment enough to have enough fully-loaded, pleasurable, positive full body feelings, about what you want to attract in your life. Living with your thoughts at a future or past moment in time, is entirely redundant in the process of being free of stress, and attracting what you want into your life.

6) You can never be enough to…You can never be sorry enough to change this problem situation. It is only when you love yourself that you have that love to radiate to others. It is only when you are allowing the abundance to flow to you, that you then have the ability to give it to others. Giving your energy – in any form – to others, whether it is love, forgiveness, agreement, or any energy, when your cup is not already brimming over, is the fastest route to the emotional poorhouse. If you want to help others, you must first help yourself. When you hide your emotions, such gestures only hide you from your own emotional impoverishment/malnutrition. They are not useful, and serve no purpose in enhancing your life or others’.

7) Be selfish enough to line up with your intentions…This is important because it is only in your thriving that you have anything to offer others. If your own energy tank is not full, you have no business looking after the tanks of others. It is important to limit your own responsibilities to prevent emotions like lack of self-worth etc. Remain present and in attendance to your own needs first and you will always give others your best, automatically.

8) You are not your accomplishments….Understand that you are not your accomplishments, what you do, what you don’t do, your beliefs, your ideas, your stuff or possessions, those are nothing to do with who you really are, they are the baggage you have picked up along the way, they are nothing to do with the spiritual you who wants to feel good; and stay connected to Peace. Lose your ego, and take this attitude of freedom with you in your everyday life.

9) The journey is the destination…Many times our internal dialogue says “If only I had x, then I would be happy, or, “I’ll be happy when I’ve got…” As you go into the world and experience the contrast of your likes .vs. your dislikes, through your everyday experiences, so a new want is born. Then comes the striving (and usually struggle) in the journey towards its manifestation, which contains all the stresses and strains you wish to rid yourself of. Understand this: you’ll never get it done. Because the journey itself towards you wants to show you new life experiences, new possibilities, new likes and dislikes, etc. that change and alter your path. Thus your job here is not to get caught up in the end result but to ensure you enjoy the journey along the way, regardless of your goal, and ensure that your everyday journey contains all the same underlying experiences, emotions, and full-body feelings that you seek from your end goal, anyway. The journey is the destination. So enjoy it.

Bringing it all together…So how do we overcome the various stress blocks to pull greater peace and abundance towards us? Reflexology is one way to release the emotional blocks of shoulds, musts, ought-tos, anger, fear, resentment, and so on.

Alternative Modality SignOnce the biggest unconscious blocks have been resolved through stimulating the nerve endings to relax and release your intentions, ambitions and passion for life will feel that much freer automatically and effortlessly. Circumstances and people appear in your life from nowhere and events begin aligning themselves, as the universe conspires with you, to realize your passion. This is one the hidden benefits of Reflexology.

Faced with the magnitude of such a great aging explosion, we can’t expect our medical system to be the our only solution in achieving optimum health and wellness, which is our birthright.

Health care in the U.S. is currently in crisis, and many people have lost confidence in medicine. Medical services are expensive, and insurance is becoming prohibitively costly.

The great majority of doctors are specialists in disease care, not in prevention and are primarily familiar with drugs and surgery. Thus preventing disease and designing programs to keep people healthy and well for life are largely enterprises outside of the medical realm.

Health is not a medical condition, and physicians are not the gatekeepers of health and wellness. We are our own gatekeepers.

Large numbers of people are venturing outside of the conventional medical establishment in a quest to manage and promote their own healthcare through culture, fitness for over all well being. They are becoming much more active in finding ways to deal with common ailments on their own.

This signifies a profound shift toward self directed health care. In response to this shift, medical educators are beginning to grapple with wellness and prevention as areas of medical specialty. This is critically important, for if physicians are going to play any significant future role in keeping our aging population healthy, they must be become astute specialists in prevention, healthcare culture, fitness and wellness.

Increasing Wellness Span
The shape of the future is ours to determine. Will we live to be energetic, healthy centenarians, or will we spend the last decades of our lives sick, incapacitated and institutionalized? The issue is one of wellness span.

Lifespan is how long you live. Wellness span is how long you stay well and healthy. Getting well is a necessity, not an option.

Health and wellness begin to decline at around age 40 when age-related degenerative conditions begin to take their toll. Our task is to extend fitness span to match life span, so we stay fit and healthy until we die.

In the quest for health, millions of Americans are turning to alternative and complementary therapies and products, including supplements, herbs, and homeopathic medicines.

News media are now promoting the safety, efficacy and overall wellness benefits of these programs and products, and scientists continue to affirm that these approaches impart real health benefits that treat ailments ranging from indigestion to allergies.

True health begins with prevention. To be healthy begins with having a “wellness mindset” that has a focus on having abundant energy and a feeling of being whole and intact. This requires a daily and consistent wellness maintenance program of exercise, sleep, drinking water, eating nutritious food, deep breathing, meditation, some fun and relaxation. These are the keys to having a long and healthy life.

Hand pointing at a Healthy Life word cloud on blue background.Since this is an unchangeable fact of life, you might as well accept and dive into this endeavor wholeheartedly, with a galvanized and enthusiastic determination to stay healthy and well for as long as you live.
